Abstract
The history of policing modern Europe has been an area of study marked more by its neglect, until recent years. Although historians have studied incidents of public disorder and riots and revolutions they have tended to stay with the actors and causes behind such disorders rather than the measures of policing brought in to control them. This area of neglect has slowly been corrected as a history of policing and its social and political context in various European states has started to be pieced together.
