Abstract
Analysing the processes and challenges of governing the UK in the 1990s increasingly involves coming to terms with the European dimension. The implications of the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union (styled ‘European Community’ until November 1993, and referred to as such in the context of discussions of the preceding period) loom ever larger. Before considering the particular challenges of the 1990s, it is important for us to understand the background to UK membership of the EU.
