American and Romantic
James’s first four important works of fiction, all of which appeared in periodical form within a period of about three and a half years — Roderick Hudson between January and December 1875, The American between June 1876 and May 1877, ‘Daisy Miller’ in June and July 1878, and The Europeans between July and October 1878 — are all variably concerned with the clash of two cultures, American and European, that we have seen as prominent in their author’s own experience in the immediately preceding years. But beyond personal biography they can also be seen as relating to certain larger cultural movements and concerns of their time.
