Abstract
I said at the outset of this book that the Conference was meant, in part, at least, to inaugurate my tenure of the Danforth Chair at The Claremont Graduate School. Many of the essays indicate this fact by the degree of attention given to my work or to issues closely associated with it. But what they do not indicate, of course, is the nature of the discussions they provoked, discussions which were characterised by an openness which is not always characteristic of interchanges at conferences. I concluded from the notes I took during them that some kind of ‘afterword’ would add to the usefulness of this collection.
