Abstract
The francophone African countries comprise a group of countries that have either experienced French or Belgian colonisation or else currently participate in specific economic zones, such as the franc zone. In these categories are the 13 countries of the franc zone (see Chapter 11), as well as the former Belgian colonies (Burundi, Rwanda, Zaire), the former French colonies which left the franc zone (Madagascar and Mauritania), and the island of Mauritius. This group of 20 countries out of the 47 in sub-Saharan Africa contains 150 million of the continent’s 500 million inhabitants, and in 1992 accounted for 30 per cent of the GDP. The per capita income is estimated at 430 dollars, close to the average for the entire continent. Within this group, there are obvious contrasts between the Sahelian countries, the Indian Ocean islands, the less developed coastal West African countries and those more successful exporting countries in West or Central Africa.
