Abstract

The case I wish to advance here involves the use of a peculiar and I believe novel kind of theoretical argument on an unsuspecting body of historical research which was itself developed mostly by the use of purely empiricist methods. In consequence I think that, although it may at first seem inappropriately autobiographical, it will be helpful if I begin by recounting how I came to develop the idea I intend to describe.
