Abstract

International transfer of technology can be carried out through the following channels: Foreign direct investment (FDI), licensing arrangements (LAs), turnkey plants, and through the export of capital goods. FDI transfers a package of capital, production technology, management skills and other managerial resources. LAs involve only production technology and, it is usually based on arm’s-length transactions, while FDI is an intra-firm transfer of technology since it is undertaken between a parent company and its affiliates or subsidiaries in other countries.
