Abstract
This chapter attempts to investigate changes in labour force status and labour turnover by using the Employment Status Survey, examining (i) the estimation of transition probabilities among several labour force statuses; (ii) the estimation of the determination in transition probabilities; and (iii) the estimation of labour turnover functions. It is emphasized that these three subjects are related, and provide complementary information.
An earlier version of this chapter was presented as a paper at the First Conference on the Contemporary Japanese Economy held in March 1993, hosted by the Centre for Japanese Economic Studies, Macquarie University, Sydney. The authors would like to thank Ms Monica Byrnes, School of Economic and Financial Studies, Macquarie University for her assistance with proofreading and corrections in this paper.
