Abstract
Most of us at the Conference ‘Europe 1945–1990s: the End of an Era?’ are historians, and so our attitude toward the events of the two years since 1989 was strongly influenced by our professional choice. A historical approach is indeed fruitful. It is not just a question of professional tendency: it is also a question of subject. Our subject was Europe, and on this continent history is an essential part of life.
