Abstract

The subject of Spain’s foreign policy during the Franco regime has been little studied. Politicians, journalists and a few historians have written on the origins of this regime and its persistence in an age when democracy was the rule in Western Europe, but not many writers have taken a profound, scientific approach. However, in recent years there has been a change for the better, in Spain as well as abroad. Economists and specialists in international relations have begun to examine the reasons for the durability of Franco’s authoritarianism, using new methodologies and opening up fresh perspectives.
