Abstract
When one realises the importance that the positions adopted by General de Gaulle on Europe and Western defence would have from 1958 on, one is naturally led to enquire into their prehistory, and to examine the continuity of his ideas.1 He has left the image of an anti-Atlantic and anti-European statesman. True or false, does this image apply to the period under consideration?
