Imagining the organisation of talk
In the last chapter we made use of our everyday commonsense knowledge of people’s everyday lives as a basis for our preliminary investigations of language use. In particular we used such knowledge to build up a picture of how situation, participants and purposes can shape the language that might be used in the course of particular episodes in the lives of ordinary people going about their ordinary business. The episodes we looked at in most detail involved spoken verbal interaction.
