Poverty and health in the welfare state
In this chapter we focus in some detail on a central debate in social welfare which has considerable — some would say crucial — significance for health and health workers: the nature, extent and effects of poverty. Chapter 5 drew attention to the considerable inequalities of wealth and income that still exist in Britain today. This chapter considers the long debate about poverty from a health perspective and evaluates the contribution made by welfare policies and reforms to reducing poverty and ill health.
