Abstract

The long history of the coastal zones’ involvement in trade, first with the region’s entrepot facilities and then the drawing to the ports of local merchants and local produce, has been covered in Chapter 1. This chapter will document the growing involvement of the rural areas in commercial production and trade. It will also analyse the level of structural change which the regions experienced as a result of their responses to the market.
