Abstract
Management scholars have studied Japanese companies in great detail for many years. According to some, Japanese culture would seem to be at the root of their firms’ competitiveness. This explanation is not fully satisfying since the concept of culture is too often regarded as simply a set of traditions that Japanese companies have integrated into their everyday practice of management.
