Middle-Class Blacks and Politics

Abstract

In this chapter I will examine the possible avenues for political action and or mobilisation available to middle-class Black people in Britain. In order to achieve this I have choosen to use as a framework for discussion three models of political action which Miles and Phizacklea (1977) suggest may serve to facilitate the incorporation of Britain’s Black population into the British political system. Although the models for political action which Miles and Phizacklea put forward relate specifically to Black workers whom they see as occupying positions within the working classes, the aim here will be to extend the parameters of each of these models in order to assess the extent to which the political perspectives of the men and women who took part in this study can be seen to fall into line with one or other of the three models.
