Against the Grain: Co-operation in Child Sexual Abuse Investigations

  • Chapter
Police Force, Police Service

Abstract

Like other dichotomies, the distinction between care and control in the work of social agencies is a convenient heuristic which can obscure as much as it illuminates. When law, or probation work, or the investigation of child sexual abuse, are seen as comprising ‘particular proportions of consent or coercion along a unilinear dimension between the two polarities’ (Hunt, 1981, p. 52), differences are exaggerated, connections are obscured. The complexity of the social world is lost.
