Abstract
The Dictionary of National Biography is a great achievement of nineteenth-century English scholarship, and its first two editors, Leslie Stephen and Sidney Lee, were knighted for their work. The double focus of this paper is designed to ensure that we see it not only in terms of its self-proclaimed theory but also in practice, through considering the versions, author, and adequacy of one biography.
