Part of the Public Policy and Politics book series (PPP)

This book has been centrally concerned with British urban policy. In this concluding chapter our first task will be to provide a brief but necessary acknowledgement that urban policy in Britain is not solely of British origin. We shall review the European Community’s role in assisting urban regeneration, a role which, depending on parliamentary decisions in Britain, may increase towards the year 2000. The subsequent sections of the chapter will look back over the material we have covered. We shall reflect upon the utility of pluralist, Marxist and New Right perspectives for understanding urban policy. Finally, using the general policy analysis framework outlined in Chapter 1, we will offer an overall assessment of urban policy in the post-1945 period.
