On being single

  • Tuula Gordon
Part of the Women in Society book series (WOSO)

I shall now focus on the ways in which women experience being single, how they perceive pleasures and gains, difficulties and tensions in singlehood, and how they react to views and perceptions of others around them. Both positive and negative aspects ar discussed. I shall not try to conclude as to which aspects are predominant; such a judgement would belie the complexity of women’s experiences. It is useful to bear in mind, nevertheless, the context set in Chapter 3: the majority of these women are voluntary, if not voluntary stable, singles.
