Abstract

I shall consider the position of unmarried women in Britain, the USA and Finland in the nineteenth century, in the 1950s and in the 1980s in order to illustrate some of the continuities and changes in their lives. The overview is necessarily cursory — changes in the position of women hinge on complex sets of developments — but some of the shifts are illustrated.
