Abstract

The 1979 revolution in Iran is a landmark in the implementation of revivalist Islamic policy. It enabled the Iranian religious institution, ulema, to set up the Islamic Republic and to claim to be the first truly populist Shia rule since the death of the first Imam, Ali ibn Abu Taleb.
