Abstract
Some social work writers have used a systems perspective in their efforts to synthesise the multiple theories and practice of social work (Specht and Vickery, 1977). The resultant ‘unitary approach’ emphasised the common aspects of what previously had been treated as quite disparate methods. This stance would view work with individuals, families, groups or communities in terms of intervention at different levels or systems. For the purposes of this chapter the methods and approaches used in family centres will be considered under the traditional headings which can be viewed as both levels/ systems for intervention and methods of work.
