Abstract

An enormous effort is made in economic theory to understand the process of economic development. The dramatic disparities in standards of living among nations is a major concern for researchers, while the fact that such disparities have not tended to decrease is an even more disturbing problem, which economists struggle to understand.

The author gratefully acknowledges Analice Amazonas and Duilio Berne for helpful comments on a previous draft of this paper. Needless to say, remaining errors are solely the author’s responsibility.
