Burma: The Longest War, 1941–45

Louis Allen was a brilliant lecturer, who, over the years, at conferences, seminars and other academic gatherings, delivered papers which were informative, provocative, often entertaining, and revealed always enormous knowledge of and infectious enthusiasm for the topic under consideration. His last performance, the paper on Burma: The Longest War, which he presented from his wheelchair at the Imperial War Museum on 5 December 1991 was vintage Louis, and those who were there will long remember it. It was, as Ian Nish observed in an obituary published in the Newsletter of the British Association for Japanese Studies, ‘a moving account which combined the knowledge which comes from direct experience and that which comes from books’.
