Abstract

This chapter reverts to the general discussion of public choice theories begun in the first three chapters. Its subject is the nature of the ‘public philosophy’ offered by mainstream public choice thought, with investigation of alternative public philosophies which may provide a sounder basis for the maintenance of a tolerably equitable and harmonious civil society. The final chapter follows this more theoretical discussion with some reflections on the public policies needed to establish a better society.
