Abstract
This chapter first reviews normative public choice theories about the desirable role of democratic political institutions. It then shows how key elements of public choice thought have been fused with economic theories of the market to form a distinctive and highly influential ideology. Finally it analyses the transformation of public choice and market theories into the realm of actual politics and policy-making.
