Abstract
In the memoirs of this extraordinary man, prefixed to his poetical works, he is said to have been born in 1729, at Elphin, in the county of Roscommon; but on the tablet erected to his memory in Westminster Abbey, by his most intimate friends, the date of his birth is 1731, and the place is stated to be Fernes, in the county of Longford. This difference is very remarkable, and it may be justly pronounced as an instance, on one side or the other, of a very culpable negligence in not making due enquiry concerning what doubtless might have been accurately determined.
