Abstract
Changes in the practice of educational administration could conceivably allow the provision of a given level of educational service at reduced cost. The desirability of this scenario has led to a keen concern about the nature and determinants of school costs. The recent growth of interest in these issues has been due in part to the widespread devolution of managerial functions towards individual institutions. More people working within the education industry now have to worry about the financial implications of their decisions than has ever before been the case. Partly for this reason, a considerable amount of recent academic research has been generated on the determinants of costs in educational institutions.
