Abstract
Part I of this book aims to review and assess the impact of Japan’s trade policies on developing countries. A wider than conventional approach has been chosen because of the recent economic transformation that has taken place in Japan. The 1970s and 1980s saw extensive changes in the industrial structure of Japan, and trade represented a major factor in this, although trade policies followed rather than led the general trend. An understanding of the factors lying behind Japan’s conventional trade policies is necessary when dealing with the theme of this section.
