Abstract
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for the conduct of Japanese foreign policy. The Minister of Foreign Affairs is usually, but not invariably, a senior politician. The senior career official in the Ministry is the Administrative Vice-Minister (Jimujikan). Next in seniority are two Deputy Vice-Ministers, responsible for political and economic affairs respectively, the Head of Administration (Kambōchō), and the official spokesmen, who also supervise the Cultural Department (Bunkabu).
