Abstract

We should, perhaps, recognise at the outset that ‘commercial’ and ‘investment’ banking do not exist in separate compartments. There are activities which overlap and are carried out by both types of bank, for example, accepting and discounting bills of exchange, foreign exchange and some aspects of trade finance. Nevertheless, there are certain activities which would be regarded as clear ‘investment’ banking (for example, underwriting share issues) and we shall discuss these in this chapter as well as those which involve a certain amount of overlap.
