Abstract

This book has analysed the trajectory of racialised political debate and policy change in British society since the late 1940s. It has shown that the racialisation of British political life did not come about in a linear fashion; it was the outcome of complex political, social and economic processes that interacted in specific ways at particular points of time. In the course of this analysis I have discussed the main dimensions of racialised politics in contemposrary Britain. Additionally, we outlined a number of questions about the likely future of race relations and the evolution of political ideologies in this field. For example: What is the relationship between racial ideologies and politics? How far has the social and economic context influenced the racialisation of political life? What are the prospects for any fundamental reforms which deracialise political discourses and tackle the roots of racial inequality?
