Competition Policies: Their Role in Forming a Market Economy

Abstract

Policies on competition are among the main instruments used in modern economies. All the “Western”, industrialised states have a number of instruments at their disposal, of which they make considerable use. Most economic experts agree that countries undergoing a transition toward a market economy should set up an institutional and legal framework, first of all in order to promote competitive relations — at least, to begin with, a competitive psychology — among economic operators. In fact, this is basically what is under way in the new economic democracies of Central and Eastern Europe.
