Abstract

Environmental policy is a rapidly growing area of planning activity. Public concern, the results of scientific research, and the role of the EC are all increasing the scope and stringency of environmental policy tools. In this chapter four aspects of environmental planning are covered: the management of water resources; pollution control including integrated pollution control; waste disposal; and the recent ‘greening’ of the land use planning system, already outlined in Chapter 5. Environmental impact assessments are included under this last section. Issues relating to derelict and contaminated land are left to Chapter 7.
