Treatment of Cocaine Abuse: Exploring the Condition and Selecting the Response

  • Chapter
Cocaine and Crack

Abstract

Any consideration of treatment must necessarily be preceded by a consideration of the condition for which the treatment may possibly be indicated. Consideration of treatment does not require the condition to be seen as a disease or illness — the term remains useful across a wide range of conditions as diverse as a broken leg, bereavement, baldness and sunburn. However, concerns about drug use will differ according to the nature of the drug-using population, the society in which this drug use takes place, and the standpoint of the observer who experiences the concern; and in only some of these cases will the concept of treatment be appropriate.
