Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to explore patterns of retirement across seven different nations during the mid 1980s. In so doing, we hope to answer the following questions:
-
How does one measure retirement?
-
Does retirement differ systematically between women and men?
-
Does work stoppage mean receipt of retirement income, and vice versa?
-
Does retirement mean impoverishment?
-
Finally, does retirement mean full work stoppage or a more gradual withdrawal from the labour market?
The author would like to thank Inge O’Connor, Barbara Butrica and Esther Gray for their help in preparing this paper; Anthony Atkinson and Martin Rein for helpful comments on an early draft; and the US National Institute on Aging for their support. The author, however, retains sole responsibility for all errors of commission and omission.
