Abstract
This is the opening stanza of ‘Selbstgericht’ (Self-Indictment), a poem by Berta Lask.1 It was written in Berlin in 1916, a time when news of heavy losses on all German fronts had started to reach those at home and it had begun to dawn on perceptive Germans that the generally prophesied quick victory was no longer likely.
I myself have helped to kill
each man fallen over there.
I myself have stood full square
within that sea of blood and gore.
