Abstract
Books are windows to the world, but for blacks in South Africa those windows have been closely shuttered by illiteracy. Access to books and libraries has been virtually non-existent for most of their history. Multiple languages, poorly-trained teachers, and appallingly inadequate funding combined under apartheid to create a separate and unequal educational system which locked the majority of South Africans into the role of a perpetual underclass.
