Abstract
Economic recession during the 1970s and 1980s coupled with the oil shocks of 1973 and 1974 challenged the supremacy of the earlier industrialized countries. At the same time newly industrialized countries such as South Korea, Malaysia and Brazil reached the stage of economic development where they became competitive in overseas markets. In order to compete industries such as autos, steel, shipbuilding and textiles had to restructure through shifts in products, new technology, plant closings and employment reductions.
