Part of the book series: Contemporary Political Studies ((CONTPOLSTUD))

Abstract

By Austrian standards the 1990 parliamentary election was an electoral earthquake. Contributing to the electoral result were such long-term trends as the decline of party identifiers, the increase in late deciders and personality voters. One of the consequences of these developments has been the increased importance of election campaigns: unlike in previous decades it is now possible to shift the views of relatively large proportions of the electorate and to win or lose during the campaign. Although the subject has been relatively neglected by Austrian academics this phase of the political process should be one of the central features of electoral and party research.
