Abstract
In the course of our examination of the history and politics of the Baltic region, we have come across the Baltic Republics and earlier regimes in that area of the southern Baltic shore at several points in our narrative. The future of the three Baltic Republics was the last remaining sequel to the Second World War, the last still untied loose end, following the unification of Germany. Its peaceful solution will be extremely important to the region and has opened the way to a new and more intense cooperation across the Baltic Sea. It is a possibility that interests and excites the Nordic countries and which has given rise to intense activity in the Nordic Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers.
