Abstract
Charles Lamb was born in London at Crown Office Row, where his father was clerk to Samuel Salt, a Bencher of the Inner Temple. Charles was educated from 1782 to 1789 at Christ’s Hospital in Newgate Street, where he began a lifelong friendship with Coleridge; then he worked briefly for Joseph Pake and in the South Sea House before, in 1792, entering the East India House, where he remained until he retired in March 1825.
