Abstract

Even the most basic technology can have devastating effects. As the magazine Small World (1990) reported: ‘Most of the women in Guatemala have an operation to remove their tear ducts when they are fourteen or fifteen years old because smoke levels in their kitchens destroy their natural ducts’. It is such consequences of technology that are the concern of this chapter.
