Abstract
In its widest sense, this essay deals with conditions for peace and political stability in so-called poly-ethnic societies. This is to be achieved by means of a detailed description of a peaceful poly-ethnic society, and an analysis of the ways in which its inhabitants resolve or avoid violent ethnic conflicts.
An earlier draft of this article was read by Tord HOivik, Kumar Rupesinghe and a pair of anonymous referees, whose comments and suggestions have led to the clarification of a number of empirical and theoretical issues.
