Part of the book series: International Political Economy Series ((IPES))

Abstract

Rather like the ‘hegemonic project’ postulated in its subtitle, this book has evolved considerably in scope and conception during the three years since it was first proposed as a contribution to the Macmillan International Political Economy Series. Then, its comparatively modest aim was to revive and further develop the theories and approaches of what might be termed the ‘Constance School’, the relevant insights of the ‘Starnberg School’, and the writings of a number of less readily classifiable political economists, and to bring them together in a study of the internationalization processes of the West German political economy. Such a study, it was thought, would introduce these important ideas to an English-speaking readership, contribute to the growing literature on international political economy, and enhance our understanding of the economic ‘base’ of the West German state. About one half of the anthology (Chapters 2–7) still reflects this original intent, although each chapter has been updated in the light of events since November 1989.
