Abstract
Although Bellow began his career with the small-scale works Dangling Man and The Victim, he is best known for substantial novels like The Adventures of Augie March and Herzog, and it is generally accepted that his talents are best represented in these sprawling forms. He has, however, contributed excellent short stories to periodicals as diverse as Partisan Review and Playboy. Some at least of these stories he felt deserved a wider audience, and they have been reprinted in two collections, Mosby’s Memoirs and Other Stories (1968), and Him with His Foot in His Mouth and Other Stories (1984).
