Abstract

At about the same period, in another society of states racked by war, philosophers in Greece were discussing similar topics. As in China their main concern was with the internal organisation of states: the system of government that would best promote the welfare of their peoples. This was the theme of the best known works of the period, The Republic of Plato and the Politics of Aristotle. Both of these touch only in passing on the relationships that should be established with other states. But neither ignores that question altogether.
