Abstract

Published in 1987, the poems in this book were written in the late 1970s at a time when I was less preoccupied with poetry than with ethnographic work in an Alaskan Eskimo village and the study of Pali Buddhism. As the poems accumulated, however, they started to take over, and preyed on ground where perhaps they had no business.
