Abstract
The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1964) marks a watershed in Peter Shaffer’s early career. Thematically and technically, the drama departs radically from Shaffer’s well-behaved plays of social realism. In Royal Hunt, the playwright expanded philosophical themes on an epic scale, employing larger-than-life’ dialogue to weld together an episodic story expressed through stylised representational techniques. The theatrically adventurous Peter Shaffer we recognise today appears for the first time in The Royal Hunt of the Sun.
